The Power of Setting Boundaries: Balancing Help and Self-Care
The Joy of Helping Others
Research has shown that helping others and receiving positive feedback or a simple thank you can lead to a good feeling, enhancing our sense of well-being. Studies indicate that altruistic behavior activates the brain’s reward system, releasing “feel-good” hormones like dopamine and oxytocin. This reinforces the positive emotions associated with being kind and supportive.
My Personal Journey
From a young age, I learned that smiling at others, being available to help, and offering support defines us as good persons. This lesson instilled in me a pure joy for helping others, leading me to volunteer all my life for various causes, such as aiding kids in Africa, supporting women in organizations, and advocating for inclusion and diversity. In the companies I had the privilege to work for, I always found pleasure in taking on projects and lightening the burdens of colleagues when they were in difficulty.
This attitude brought me good relationships, but it also led to burnout twice. I couldn’t say no. I wasn’t able to express if I believed in a project or was ready to move on. Instead, I forced myself to deliver, even when deadlines were unmanageable or targets were impossibly high. I felt that the more I took on, the more impactful I was.
The Importance of Setting Boundaries
I learned the hard way how important it is to set boundaries, to say no, and to risk not pleasing others. I realized how high my fear of not being liked was, the fear of judgment, and the consequent exclusion. Behind my inability to set boundaries was a hidden fear of not feeling accepted and included.
Positive Consequences of Setting Boundaries
Research shows that setting boundaries can lead to numerous positive outcomes. These include reduced stress, increased self-esteem, better relationships, and improved mental health. By setting boundaries, we protect our time and energy, allowing us to focus on what truly matters and ensuring that we don’t stretch ourselves too thin.
